memorizing

Thank goodness for the ability to memorize everything, which is one of my son's strongest points! We would never ever ever EVER survive spelling tests without his ability to memorize words.

Is it ok that he is learning words through memorization and not through phonics? We do try to keep spelling the words out to him. With phonics alone he gets halfway through spelling the word and forgets what word he was spelling and loses focus.

  1. My son is 12; 13 in April. He was "diagnosed" in kindergarten but we knew it was Asperger's when he was 3 (no one would diagnose that early back then....!!!) He has an INCREDIBLE memory..always has. Used to memorize people's license plates and then when they would come over for a party or something he would say, "Hi MPZ249"...they would look at my husband and I and we would say, "Is that your license plate number?" We found most people didn't even KNOW their license plate number so they would run out to their car to look and sure enough...he was never wrong!

Regarding spelling tests...I think it is fine that he is learning through memorization. My son learns this way and pretty much aces every spelling test he has ever taken. Once he WRITES down a word...it is in his brain forever. I say play to his strengths and if this works for him, go for it.

I just found your blog through Facebook...not much time to read now but I will come back to it. I don't even know how old your son is...if you ever want to "chat", my name is Julie and here is my email: oldmothhub@cox.net.
I feel for you about not much help available but let me tell you there is a MOUNTAIN of information compared to when my son was diagnosed in 2001.

    Take care!
    Julie
